Developers from all over the world are invited to create applications
Ford will expand its innovative Traffic Tamer App Challenge globally, giving developers access to information from their Ford vehicles to create apps that help alleviate traffic congestion.
The Traffic Tamer App Challenge encourages developers to make the most of trip computer information through Ford's world-first OpenXC research platform.
OpenXC gives developers access to more than 20 different data streams, including everything from GPS coordinates to the status of wipers and headlights. The information can be leveraged by applications to provide drivers or future autonomous vehicles with a highly accurate and detailed picture of traffic, road and weather conditions within a network of connected vehicles.
The Traffic Tamer App Challenge was first launched in London last year and the winner will be announced on May 18 and will receive €7,300. Ford announced at the Mobile World Congress that similar, open innovation competitions will be launched in five cities across Asia, Africa, North America, South America and again in Europe. Exact locations will be announced at a later date.
In the future, the challenges will continue in more areas, from developing software applications for smartphones and mobile devices, to creating special equipment such as the 3D printed vibrating gear knob, which offers tactile feedback on when the driver should change gear through a slight vibration of the selector.
