Truly practical wearable technology that isn't readily apparent today is rare these days. We're more likely to see eye-catching objects like prototypes (see Google Glass).
That's what the people behind Cuff, a line of accessories that each connect to a hidden wireless device, have taken advantage of. On Tuesday, the company introduced a new line of jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces and, for men, key chains, all accompanied by the CuffLinc device.
The CuffLinc is a small, waterproof black device with a built-in accelerometer that offers a Bluetooth to your smartphone. In the Cuff app for iOS, the user can configure the device's internal button to send an alert to a friend or family member in the event of an emergency.
The goal of the idea behind the device is to give the user, in addition to the jewelry, a way to send a wireless alarm, without making the most obvious move, or perhaps awkward step, of reaching for their phone.
Some potential uses for the device, according to Sood, include alerting authorities during an attack, people with health problems being able to alert family members when they are in need, or simply using the system to maintain daily contact with a loved one.
