Following the tactic followed with the renaming of SkyDrive to OneDrive, Microsoft has also made changes to the Office Web Apps suite, which will now be called Office Online.
With this specific renaming, Microsoft hopes to be able to accurately convey the essence of what Office Web Apps (now Office Online) is: an online suite of office applications that includes versions of applications such as Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc., which can be used for free by users of the OneDrive platform.
In addition, the email address will also change to Office.com, where Office Online will be located.
According to Amanda Lefebvre, Product Marketing Manager of Office Online, the name change was made because the previous name (Office Web Apps) was confusing to many users, as they believed it was an online store in which they would have to browse, find the application they were interested in and install it on their computer.
On the contrary, the new name (Office Online) directly indicates that the suite is available for use via the web browser.
From the new site (Office.com), users will be able to easily find and use all the applications and tools of the suite (Word, Outlook, People, OneNote, PowerPoint, Calendar, Excel) simply by signing in with their Microsoft account or creating a new one.
New features include new document templates, as well as the ability to quickly switch between apps. Files created using Office Online apps are automatically saved to OneDrive.
