Most of you probably don't know about Pidgin, but you should. It's a free, open source program that runs on Windows, Linux, Ubuntu, MacOSX, and can bring all your chat applications together in one.
It accepts data from the chat networks AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, MXit, MySpaceIM, and Zephyr, so you have all of these in a single window. And in addition, by installing a plugin, it also accepts the Skype network.
But beyond the convenience, that is, having all your chats gathered in one program, it speaks Greek and is super secure since it is open source, and has third-party plugins that increase its security. An example is the OTR (Off the record messaging) plugin, which encrypts all your conversations between you and a contact, resulting in the intermediary (say, Google chat) seeing encrypted text.
In the new version 2.10.8, Pidgin fixes about 20 user comments, and makes several improvements. A problem that existed with Facebook chat when connecting via XMPP has not been fixed, but the company urges us to wait a little longer.
