Tesla confirms Semi electric truck is coming to Europe

Tesla has confirmed that its electric Semi truck is now entering the next phase of its journey, with its European presence taking shape. The company said it will reveal technical specifications and all the key details for its European launch during the IAA Transportation trade show , which takes place in Hanover, Germany, from September 15 to 20.

A Tesla Semi will be on display at the show floor, giving visitors the chance to see the electric truck. The announcement, while brief, is significant, as Tesla has so far avoided giving a clear timetable for the European market.

The big questions remain

Tesla has not yet revealed how much the Semi will cost in Europe, what its exact range will be according to European standards, or when the first deliveries. These are likely to be some of the most important pieces of information from the presentation in Hanover.

The company had previously shown the truck at the 2024 IAA Transportation tradeshow, but without a specific release plan. This year's announcement shows that Tesla is now looking to move from general promises to commercial reality.

Autonomy up to 800 kilometers

Technically, the European Semi is expected to be based on the model already built in Nevada. Tesla has introduced two versions, Standard Range and Long Range, with a reported range of approximately 523 and 800 kilometers respectively.

Both versions feature a three-motor drive system with a total power of 800 kW, or approximately 1,072 horsepower. They also support charging with a power of up to 1.2 MW through special Megachargers, a feature that can significantly reduce the time a truck spends at a charging station.

For logistics companies, charging speed is just as important as range. A truck that can travel hundreds of kilometers but takes many hours to recharge limits its operational utilization.

Production enters a new phase

The European expansion coincides with Tesla's effort to ramp up production of the Semi. The company began mass production in April at its Gigafactory in Nevada, a roughly 1.7 million-square-foot facility designed for a production capacity of up to 50,000 trucks per year.

The development is critical for a model that was first introduced several years ago and has faced repeated delays. Now, orders are starting to pile up. Swedish transportation technology company Einride has ordered 500 Semis, while PepsiCo already has nearly 100 vehicles in operation in California.

Europe already has strong players

Tesla, however, is not entering a market that is waiting for the first electric truck. Quite the opposite. European manufacturers have already developed a significant presence in this sector.

The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 is operating in many European countries, offering a range of around 500 kilometres. At the same time, Volvo Trucks, which has a strong position in electric heavy-duty vehicles, has introduced a new generation of electric trucks, while MAN, Scania, Renault Trucks and DAF already have relevant models on the market or are in the process of delivering them.

This means that Tesla will have to compete with manufacturers that have years of experience, extensive dealer networks, workshops, spare parts and support infrastructure across Europe.

The big bet for the Tesla Semi

Tesla's advantage so far lies in range, power and the cost announced for the US market. In the US, the Long Range version costs around $290,000, while the Standard Range costs around $260,000.

The question is whether these advantages will be transferred to Europe. The presentation in Hanover should answer not only how far the Semi can travel, but also how easily it can be integrated into the everyday fleets of European transport companies.

Tesla now has the opportunity to prove that the Semi is not just an ambitious project, but a mature commercial product. The European market will be the next big test.
