Security concerns push one in three Europeans away from mobile banking

mobile bankingThe reason is that they do not believe that mobile devices are adequately protected when it comes to online shopping or when using online banking.

The recent Kaspersky Consumer Security Risks survey revealed that one in three mobile device users in Europe do not feel safe making online payments with smartphones or tablets. The reason is that they do not believe that mobile devices are sufficiently protected when shopping online or when using online banking.

Online stores, online payments, and e-banking systems have made financial transactions easier. Today, users can pay bills, buy rare items, and conduct transactions with just a few clicks, without wasting time in queues.

The widespread use of smartphones and tablets makes online banking even easier. With the special features of these gadgets, users can manage everything, not only when they are at home or in the office, but from anywhere there is Internet access or a mobile signal. However, many smartphone and tablet owners do not understand the benefits that this instant access offers and it seems that many are hesitant to "welcome" mobile banking technologies.

According to the survey, 33% of respondents in Europe would not use a mobile device for online transactions, such as purchasing products in online stores. A slightly smaller, but not insignificant, percentage of smartphone and tablet owners (31%) are not comfortable using their devices for online banking. Only 23% of smartphone users and 45% of tablet users are not concerned about entering financial information on their gadgets.

Android is the most popular mobile operating system in the world and – as such – is the most frequently targeted by cybercriminals. This makes sense, given that the more users are targeted, the easier it is for fraudsters to generate illegal revenue. According to Kaspersky Lab, 99% of mobile malware samples are developed for Android. In 2012, the company’s experts identified 35,000 Android malware samples. In the first half of 2013, this number increased to more than 47,000.

For the above reason, 11% of respondents in Europe said they would not use Android for financial transactions.

Fake Android apps for online banking, phishing attacks, and malicious attacks developed to steal user data via the keyboard are some of the malicious tools that have been most frequently used in attacks against Android device owners.

In general, smartphone and tablet owners cannot be accused of being overly cautious when making financial transactions. However, despite the increase in the number of threats to Android, users can make payments via mobile devices by protecting their device with a reliable security solution.

Protection from Kaspersky Lab

To protect Android device users from cybercriminals, Kaspersky Lab has developed Kaspersky Internet Security for Android, an easy-to-use security solution featuring a variety of protection mechanisms capable of providing high-quality security to mobile device owners.

The advanced malware detection technologies incorporated in this solution prevent the installation of spyware that “imitates” banking applications, even if this program has been downloaded from the official Google Play store. The built-in anti-phishing system detects and blocks fake pages of banks, online stores and electronic payment systems, which are often used by fraudsters to trick victims into revealing login and account details. Another special feature of Kaspersky Internet Security for Android is the ability to check web links received via text messages, protecting users from malicious attacks via mass SMS sending, which are often used by cybercriminals.

Kaspersky Lab's solution offers reliable protection against almost all threats – including those targeting users' money.

Kaspersky Internet Security for Android is available on the official Kaspersky Lab website and on Google Play. The solution is also integrated into Kaspersky Internet Security – Multi-Device, a product developed to simultaneously protect multiple mobile devices running different operating systems.
