Flipper Zero: Community-assisted firmware development

Flipper Devices has announced significant changes to its development strategy for its Flipper Zero, the portable pen-testing tool that has gained a cult following among cybersecurity professionals, researchers, and developers. While the company assures that official firmware support will continue, the development of new features will no longer be a core activity of the internal team, marking a new period where the user community will take a much more active role.

The decision reflects the company's shift in priorities, which is now investing significant resources in the development of new products and platforms. Thus, Flipper Zero essentially moves to a maintenance and gradual evolution model, without however being abandoned by its creators.

Attention is turning to new devices

According to Flipper Devices, the next big bet is the Flipper One, a new open source platform based on Linux and aimed at developers, makers and security professionals . The company has already invited the community to actively participate in the development of the device, following the open source philosophy that has characterized the Flipper ecosystem from the beginning.

The company is also expanding its portfolio with products with a different focus. A typical example is the Busy Bar, a smart device designed to help people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) reduce distractions while working. Its commercial availability begins on July 14 in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Canada.

Flipper Zero: Firmware is now considered mature

The company's management maintains that the change in strategy does not mean abandoning the Flipper Zero. On the contrary, it believes that the device's software has now reached a level of maturity that does not require continuous development by a large team of engineers.

The first stable version 1.0 of the firmware was released in September 2024, after three years of intensive development. Since then, successive updates have followed, with version 1.4.3 being the most recent stable release. According to the company, the SDK and available APIs are now considered fully stabilized, while the key features promised to users have already been integrated.

This means that the emphasis is now shifting from adding new features to improving the reliability, stability, and long-term support of the platform.

The community takes on a leading role

Recent statements by Flipper Devices executives had created the impression that firmware development was permanently halted, provoking strong reactions from users. The company was quick to clarify that this was not the case and presented a new collaboration model, in which community contributions will be the main driver of the project's development.

From now on, all new feature requests will be collected through GitHub Discussions, where users can discuss and rate them through voting. The development team will review the proposals on a weekly basis, prioritizing those that garner the most support.

At the same time, pull requests from independent developers will now be accepted with stricter review procedures, to ensure the quality and reliability of the code before it is incorporated into official releases.

Stricter controls and greater emphasis on quality

The new strategy comes with stricter development rules. Every firmware change must go through mandatory integration testing and regression testing processes, which will also be open to community participation.

Special attention will also be paid to code generated with the help of artificial intelligence tools. According to Flipper Devices, changes to low-level functions are difficult to verify when they are generated by AI, so they will be examined with increased thoroughness. The same will apply to modifications that affect the user interface or require updating the official documentation.

More than a million users

Another reason behind the change in development model is the impressive expansion of the Flipper Zero community. The company says that the device now has over one million users worldwide, which has dramatically increased the volume of requests, comments, and technical support.

The small development team is no longer able to effectively manage daily communication, so it was decided to remove direct messages on all social media channels. From now on, GitHub will be the only official point of contact between the company and the community.

This choice enhances transparency, as all discussions, proposals and decisions will be made publicly, allowing users to actively participate in shaping the future of the platform.

A new development model for Flipper Zero

Flipper Devices' decision reflects a broader trend in the open source space: mature products are gradually transitioning from exclusive development by companies to collaborative development through their communities. For Flipper Zero, the success of this model will depend on whether developers and users continue to invest time and expertise in its ecosystem.

If the collaboration proves effective, Flipper Zero has all the prerequisites to remain one of the most important tools in the cybersecurity community, while Flipper Devices will be able to devote more resources to the development of its next generation of innovative devices.
