Some T-Mobile customers with older phone plans are being automatically upgraded to newer T-Mobile plans, CNET reports. The company has begun sending notifications to customers with older plans, letting them know they will be transferred to a current plan. The move is part of a broader strategy by T-Mobile to simplify and modernize its services, as well as eliminate old billing codes that have accumulated over the years.

Customers who are transferred to a new plan may see an automatic increase in their bill. The carrier plans to transfer customers to comparable modern plans. T-Mobile's options include Essentials, Essentials Saver, Experience More and Experience Beyond. Prices for a line start at $50 per month.
These plans offer enhanced services and features, such as increased data, better call quality, and access to faster 5G networks.
T-Mobile Chief Marketing Officer Allan Samsonsaid that the majority of customers who are automatically upgraded will pay less than the plan costs in the marketplace, and will not be charged the same price as a new customer. The average increase will be about $4 per line per month, with some prices increasing by $6. This approach is intended to maintain customer satisfaction while offering upgraded services without a significant financial burden.

Employees were informed that T-Mobile is transitioning customers to modern plans to get rid of over 1,100 legacy billing codes and were warned to expect an increased volume of customer communication in the coming weeks. This change is necessary to simplify billing processes and avoid confusion for both customers and company employees.
T-Mobile declined to tell CNET which plans are being retired, but some date back 15 years. The company has gone through several plans over the past decade and a half, and Sprint users with old plans were integrated into T-Mobile after the 2020 merger. That merger resulted in the consolidation of networks and services, but also the need for further reorganization of plans.
Thousands of customers are affected and will receive notifications from T-Mobile. Plans will change during the next billing cycle. Customers who are not happy with T-Mobile’s decision can choose a different T-Mobile plan or switch providers. This option gives customers the opportunity to consider their needs and choose the best possible solution for them, whether by staying with T-Mobile or exploring other alternatives in the market.

T-Mobile's decision to automatically upgrade old plans has sparked backlash, but also interest in the new plans' capabilities. Customers are encouraged to evaluate the new options and decide if they meet their needs. T-Mobile, for its part, is trying to ensure that the transition is as smooth and hassle-free as possible, offering support and guidance to its customers during this process.
