Don't expect new Macs at WWDC 2026

Despite WWDC 2026 being a software conference, new Macs are sometimes announced, and there are always predictions that there will be, but this time it’s highly unlikely. WWDC coverage inevitably includes commentary about new Mac releases, often fueled by wishful thinking or clickbait. Before the event, it’s rumored or sometimes seemingly confirmed that there will be new Mac hardware, but almost always there isn’t.

After the event, coverage shifts to how there was never any intention for new Mac hardware, with expectations set for the next event.

That's why 2026 almost certainly won't feature new Mac hardware: it's a software conference. From 2015 to 2025, there have been seven WWDC events without Mac hardware and four with. The four WWDC events that showed off new Macs were:

  • 2017: MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, iMac Pro
  • 2019: Mac Pro, Pro Display XDR
  • 2022: M2 MacBook Air, M2 13-inch MacBook Pro
  • 2023: 15-inch MacBook Air, M2 Max and M2 Ultra Mac Studio, M2 Ultra Mac Pro

While one could argue that 2020 included the Apple Silicon developer kit, there was nothing for the public to see. Apple announced it partly because Apple Silicon made a significant difference for app developers, but also because WWDC is a high-profile event. If Apple wants to promote something, it either shows it at WWDC or saves it for the iPhone launch, maximizing coverage and attention.

This strategy is evident in the launch of the Apple Watch alongside the iPhone, as Apple is careful not to overwhelm the market by releasing too many products at once. In 2017, Apple unveiled the iMac Pro at WWDC to reassure pro users that it hadn't abandoned them, despite the product not being released until December 2017. Similarly, in 2019, Apple unveiled the new Mac Pro and Pro Display XDR to allay concerns about updates to its flagship Mac.

Apple shows off Macs at WWDC when there’s a big reason to, but the 2022 MacBook Air launch, which featured a radical redesign, wasn’t as impressive as Apple might have hoped. The same goes for the 2023 15-inch MacBook Air, which introduced a larger screen size but wasn’t a response to strong public demand. Both years also saw updates to the MacBook Pro, Mac Pro, or Mac Studio, but those were just updates and felt like a side event compared to the announcement of the Apple Vision Pro.

Don't expect new Macs at WWDC 2026

Heading into WWDC 2026, while Apple has the opportunity to make a big announcement about new Macs, it hasn't reserved any major releases for that event. Statistically, it seems less likely that there will be new Macs, and for now, there's no strong demand for an improved Mac Pro. Mac Studio buyers are looking for faster processors but aren't unhappy with the current design, and Mac mini users feel similarly.
