Anonymous has launched a DDOS attack against a significant number of Russian websites in protest of the arrests of 30 Greenpeace activists. The hacking attacks are being carried out as part of the OpGreenRights operation .
Targets include the Russian Foreign Ministry (mid.ru), the Russian Embassy in the US (russianembassy.org), the Russian Consulate General in the US (ruscon.org), and energy giant Gazprom (gazprom.com).
The attacks took place last Sunday, while currently, all websites have been fully restored.
Anonymous expressed its displeasure over the fact that the Greenpeace activists are being charged with piracy and hooliganism, and that they face up to 15 years in prison. Despite repeated appeals from the international community, Russia does not seem willing to release the 30 defendants.
Hacktivists, however, warn that if Russia does not release the activists, the attacks will intensify.
