Bill Gates: “Well, let’s not prioritize Internet access over the malaria vaccine”

“Technology is an amazing thing,” Bill Gates notes in an interview with the Financial Times , “but it’s not going to save the world.”

Speaking to the newspaper about what is going to make the planet a better place to live, the Microsoft co-founder said that improvements in technology can have their benefits, but they cannot meet the needs of those in despair.

“I love technology,” Gates notes, “but when we talk about improving our lives, we have more serious things to deal with, like survival and feeding children.”

“PCs, in terms of the hierarchy of human needs, are not even in the top five,” he continues… “If you think connectivity is the key, I don’t think so”…

When asked by the Financial Times whether Internet access is more important than something else, such as finding a malaria vaccine, he said , “As a priority, it’s funny (such a comparison).”

Gates' comments come just months after Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and other tech moguls announced a "humanitarian" (in their view) initiative aimed at bringing Internet access to as many people as possible.
