Microsoft has revealed the codename for the next generation of Xbox: Project Helix.

New head Asha Sharma confirmed that the console will support both Xbox and PC games. In a post on X, Sharma wrote: “Great morning with the Xbox team. We discussed our commitment to bringing Xbox back including Project Helix, the codename for the next-gen console.” Sharma emphasized that Project Helix will improve performance and play your Xbox and PC games.
This strategy reflects Microsoft's evolution into gaming, which began in 1998 when four DirectX engineers – Kevin Bachus, Seamus Blackley, Ted Hase, and Otto Berkes – created a prototype console based on Windows and with Dell laptop componentsto counter the threat of Sony's PlayStation 2. The original Xbox launched on November 15, 2001, and sold over 24 million units worldwide, establishing Microsoft as a serious player in the console industry. This success was due to the company's innovative approach that combined PC hardware with console simplicity.

Xbox Project Helix
According to Sarah Bond, former president of Xbox, the next-gen console will be “a very premium, very high-end curated experience.” Microsoft has hinted that the next Xbox will be a console-PC hybrid.
Project Helix is expected to incorporate advanced technologies for improved performance. AMD has hinted that it will be ready to support a launch in 2027.However, we don't know much about the new console yet.
Compatibility with PC games means users will be able to access vast libraries of games directly from their console. This is a significant advantage over competitors like Sony's PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Microsoft seems to be aiming to create a "Windows for Gaming" that will work seamlessly across both console and PC environments.

Impact on the gaming market and future prospects
The announcement of Project Helix comes at a time of intense competition in the gaming industry, which is valued at approximately $200 billion worldwide and is expected to continue its upward trajectory. Microsoft is pursuing a platform convergence strategy, prioritizing services over hardware exclusivity, especially after the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This strategic shift reflects the recognition that the future of gaming lies in providing services and content rather than controlling hardware.
