Facebook users should be especially careful about posts about cheating in the popular online strategy game, Social Empires.
Bitdefender experts say that the posts are designed to lure users to a website where they will be asked to fill out all kinds of fake surveys, as well as hand over their personal information. Unfortunately, over 135,000 users have already been scammed.
The fake posts write something like this: “Awesome! Social Empires Cheat GOT 99999990 GOLD, FOOD, WOOD, STONE and 10000 Cash 100% Working try now!”
When Facebook members click on the link in the post, they are redirected to a new Blogspot blog, where they are asked to share the message with five fan pages that promote scams and abuse.
Once this is done, based on their location, victims are presented with a page asking them to complete the survey. To make everything look real, it displays the logos of some security companies.
As always, there is no “hack-trick”. Instead, victims help cybercriminals promote their page. In addition, the scammers earn money every time a survey is completed, not to mention the fact that they collect personal data, which can be used for other malicious purposes.
Popular game names are often exploited in such scams, which is why users are urged to be extra careful before liking posts or agreeing to take part in a survey.
