After years of development and consultation with leading manufacturers, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) has officially announced the release of Aliro version 1.0, introducing a single, interoperable standard for digital keys. The ambition is clear: to offer all users an experience similar to Apple’s Home Key, but without the constraints of a closed ecosystem.
CSA, the organization behind the Matter, is attempting to solve a chronic fragmentation problem in the access control space with Aliro. Just as Matter was designed to bridge smart home ecosystems, Aliro aims to create a common language for smart locks and mobile wallets.

What is Aliro and how does it work?
Aliro is a new communication protocol and certification frameworkthat enables interoperability between devices and platforms. It aims to be supported by all major ecosystems, including Apple, Google, and Samsung.
On a technology level, Aliro is designed to operate in multiple deployment environments, leveraging Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Ultra Wideband (UWB) and Near Field Communication (NFC). The combination of these technologies enables both contactless access with a simple touch and “hands-free” proximity-based unlocking, with secure identity verification.
Essentially, it's an open version of the experience that was previously offered primarily through the Apple Home Key. The difference is that this experience will no longer be limited to a single platform.
Why Aliro is changing the face of the smart home
Until now, a manufacturer who wanted to integrate support for Apple Home Key had to work directly with Apple, while NFC or UWB functionality was exclusively available to iPhone users. This limited adoption and increased development complexity.

With Aliro, the process is simplified through a single certification standard. Lower integration complexity translates into faster innovation and shorter time market . For consumers, this means more choice and greater availability of compatible locks.
A prime example is the Aqara U400, the first smart lock with UWB support. Until now, only Apple users could take advantage of proximity unlocking. With the planned upgrade to Aliro, the same experience will be extended to users of other platforms.

While Apple users already have NFC and UWB via Apple Wallet, Aliro significantly enhances the value of their investment. In a mixed household, where not everyone uses an iPhone, having a common standard means everyone can have a digital key in their own wallet.
Interoperability is not limited to the home. Aliro is designed to work in any environment where access control is required: apartment buildings, offices, gyms, hotels, even hospitals. The prospect of using one’s smartphone as a universal access “pass” brings the unification of physical and digital identity closer.
Devices that come with Aliro support
With the announcement of version 1.0, no platform offers native support yet, but it paves the way for device certification. Several manufacturers have already announced Aliro-compatible products.

These include the Aqara U400, Nuki Keypad 2 NFC, Ultraloq Latch 7 Pro by Xthings, Avia Aurora, Kwikset Halo Select Plus, Level Touch, Level Lock Pro and the Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt.
The presence of many big names in the industry suggests that the industry is taking the new standard seriously. If support from major mobile ecosystems is confirmed soon, Aliro could become the de facto standard for digital keys worldwide.
