Finder bug in macOS Tahoe highlights Apple's decline in UI quality

Apple released macOS Tahoe last September, but despite the two updates that followed, it's still struggling to fix an annoying interface issue in the Finder, which appears to have been introduced with the Liquid Glass redesign.

Finder

If you've updated your Mac to macOS Tahoe and prefer to work in Finder's column view, there's a good chance you've been frustrated by the problem, which developer Jeff Johnson has been tracking with remarkable persistence on his blog.

At the bottom of each column in the Finder are small resize handles that allow you to expand or shrink each column as desired. However, in macOS 26 and macOS 26.2, when scroll bars are set to “always show,” the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom overlaps and covers these handles, so you can’t click them to adjust column widths like you could in previous versions of macOS, such as Sequoia.

With the recent release of macOS 26.3, Apple attempted to fix the problem. The vertical scroll bars were reduced in length so that the resizable widgets now sit above the horizontal bar and are technically clickable again. Unfortunately, as Johnson points out, the horizontal scroll bar still overlaps the file names in view, regularly causing content to be hidden.

Additionally, if you hide the navigation bar and status bar, the layout leaves an odd amount of empty space below the scroll bars, making the whole thing look unfinished.

Johnson's point is that while the most annoying bug is less bad now, the overall layout of the column view still feels unfinished – especially for those who keep the scroll bars always visible.

As Daring Fireball 's John Gruber points out , it's an embarrassing failure for a company that once boasted about pixel-perfect settings in its Mac operating system.

macOS Tahoe 26.4 is expected to be released in March or April and could introduce some new Siri features, although at least some of the features we were expecting may have been delayed, depending on who you believe. The update is also expected to introduce new emoji characters.
