China is not the only country that may build its own search engine, Russia also appears to be doing the same. According to the local newspaper Vedomosti, cited by Reuters, the Russian government is working on a new search engine, which will be run by state-owned Rostelecom.

The government has already allocated some money to the project and tried to attract some talent from existing search engines. It also appears that the project was imposed on the telecommunications company by the state.

The website, www.sputnik.ru, is said to be online in the first quarter of 2014. It also appears to be used by all state employees by default. The new search engine has registered about half of Russia, according to the announcement.

However, its chances of becoming competitive in the Russian market are slim. Yandex dominates search in Russia, with about 60% of the market, but there are many other competitors, including Google and some local sites.
