Wi-Fi 8 unveiled with first prototype connection

TP-Link has announced that it has successfully tested an early prototype of Wi-Fi 8 hardware, marking a “critical milestone” in its development. This progress comes as the rollout of Wi-Fi 7 is just beginning.

Although details of the test are limited, TP-Link has validated Wi-Fi 8 (802.11bn) beaconing and data transfer capabilities, demonstrating its viability for future consumer products. The prototype hardware was developed through a “joint industry collaboration,” and TP-Link expects consumer devices to be available before the standard is ratified, which the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is expected to complete by 2028.

In a July blog post, Qualcomm explained that Wi-Fi 8 aims to maintain stable connections rather than simply increase bandwidth speeds. Like its predecessor, Wi-Fi 8 will use the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz , and 6 GHz bands, with a theoretical maximum channel width of 320MHz and a peak data rate of 23Gbps. However, it focuses on improving real-world performance and connection reliability.

The goal of Wi-Fi 8 is to boost performance in environments with weak signals or high network loads, where many devices are sharing the same connection. In theory, it can handle more devices at once and reduce latency when users are further away from the router or moving around their home. This should lead to a smoother gaming and streaming experience, minimizing issues like freezes, disconnections, and “robotic voice” during video calls.

Qualcomm said, “Wi-Fi 8 marks a fundamental shift — moving beyond peak speeds to prioritize reliable performance in challenging real-world conditions. It is designed to bring Wi-Fi closer than ever to the reliability and responsiveness of wired infrastructure.”
