Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic Games and is planning to introduce a major innovation: air taxis to ferry visitors into the city. The LA28 organizing committee has announced a partnership with Archer Aviation, aiming to provide air routes that will bypass the city's traffic congestion.
According to the announcement, Archer’s fleet of eVTOL aircraft will be used to transport fans and city residents to and from key Olympic destinations. The flights are expected to last 10 to 20 minutes and will serve select locations within the metropolitan area.

Although the vision of flying taxis is not new—it was also planned for Paris 2024 but did not materialize due to delays in certification—Archer hopes to secure the necessary green light from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) within 2025. The crucial “Type Certification” that will guarantee the safety and construction compliance of the aircraft is still in progress.
Each air taxi will be able to carry up to four passengers and will operate in a similar way to helicopters, while bookings will be made through a special app – Uber-style. While the price per ride has not yet been determined, Archer CEO Adam Goldsteinstressed that the goal is to charge fees at levels comparable to a premium Uber ride.

Backed by giants like Boeing and United Airlines, Archer is among the pioneers in the space, aiming to offer fast, quiet and environmentally friendly short-haul flights. However, as with any emerging technology, progress has not been smooth: challenges such as limited battery energy storage and the lack of certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) remain significant obstacles.
The Midnight, equipped with 12 engines and propellers, was designed to offer lower noise and emissions levels than traditional helicopters – features that make it ideal for the dense and noise-sensitive urban area of Los Angeles. LA28 says Archer’s goal is to obtain certification with safety standards similar to those of commercial aviation.
“We aspire to redefine mobility in Los Angeles and leave a technological footprint that will impact transportation across America,” said the company’s CEO, Adam Goldstein. “The 2028 Olympics are the perfect opportunity to show what we can achieve.”
Although the air taxi market has encountered several delays and difficulties, Archer seems determined to make a difference. The 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles could serve as the global debut for a technology that, if successful, could radically change the landscape of transportation in metropolitan areas.
