As part of its One Less Car pilot program , Uber is offering $1,000 to drivers to stop using car for five weeks their . The program will involve 175 people from the US and Canada .

Uber says the cost of owning a car is higher than ever. This means that it's taking a significant toll on an individual or family's finances. At the same time, too many cars are taking a toll on people's health and their cities. That's why the company is introducing the One Less Car.

The challenge, which will run from July 22 to August 25, is open to car owners in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, Miami, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver.
Participants will receive up to $1,000 – based on the average monthly cost of vehicle in the U.S. – to use alternative transportation options, such as Uber taxis, bikes and scooters, rental cars and public transportation.
The amount of money will be given as follows:
- $500 in Uber Cash, which can be used for rides via the Uber app, car rides, or Lime bike and scooter share.
- a $200 car rental/sharing voucher
- $300 for other modes of transportation, such as public transit.
Those who participate also receive a free month of Uber One membership.

Participation requirements
According to Uber, participants must be 18 years of age or older and have a driver's license, a vehicle they use more than three times a week, and a bank card.
Participants will be asked to report on their experience throughout the trial. They will talk about the alternative transportation solutions they will use and the impact that not using car .

This isn’t a new experiment for Uber. A similar program in 2023 asked 58 Australians to stop using their cars for four weeks. The experiences of the individuals were varied and interesting. Many said that the decision to give up their cars for a month allowed them to discover new forms of transportation, such as public transport, cycling and walking.

Some appreciated the money savings they gained from participating in the program. Without the costs of fuel, maintenance, and parking, many found that living without a car can be more economical. Others said that the experience helped them reduce the stress associated with driving and traffic congestion.
Uber found that people need access to at least four other modes of transportation to completely abandon cars . However, only 58% of respondents said they planned to sell their vehicles in the near future.
