End of an era for MTV News – It deletes the archives of music journalism

MTV News archives were deleted on Monday, removing decades of music journalism from the internet .

According to Variety, links to mtvnews.com and mtv.com/news began redirecting to MTV's homepage. The redirection continued to the homepage as of Wednesday afternoon.

The archives contained works from the news website's founding in 1996, documenting the rise of many stars and genres over the years.

The service was shut down in 2023, part of a wave of layoffs by its parent company, Paramount. The layoffs led to a 25% reduction in jobs at Paramount.

Meanwhile CMT (formerly Country Music Television), also owned by Paramount, removed the news from its website last week, according to Variety.

Many former MTV news executives took to social media to mourn the loss of their former workplace, while others criticized the removal of the collected works.

Brian Hiatt, a writer for Rolling Stone, noticed that some older articles were not accessible via the Wayback Machine.
