Honda Nissan merger

Japanese automakers Honda and Nissan have announced plans to merge to become more competitive and beat rivals in the electric vehicle market. The two companies confirmed they have signed a memorandum of understanding that would create the third-largest automaker by sales, behind Toyota and Volkswagen.

Nissan's alliance member Mitsubishi Motorsis also in talks with Honda and Nissan about joining the merger. Based on the market capitalization of all three companies, a final merger could result in an entity valued at more than $50 billion. "Creating new mobility value by pooling resources, including the knowledge, talents and technologies that Honda and Nissan have been developing for so many years, is essential to overcoming the environmental changes facing the automotive industry," said Honda President and CEO Toshihiro Mibe.

The proposed merger, first unveiled last week, aims to create a joint company to counter growing global competition from brands such as Tesla and China's BYD in the electric vehicle market. The deal would also help rescue Nissan, which in mid-2024 saw its net profit fall by 90% and in November announced plans to lay off thousands of workers.

"I believe that by combining the strengths of both companies, we can deliver unparalleled value to customers worldwide who value our brands," said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida. "Together, we can create a unique way for them to enjoy cars that neither company could achieve alone."
