Electrica Group, a major electricity in Romania, is investigating a ransomware attack on its systems.
The company serves over 3.8 million users in the country and was founded as a division of the National Electricity Company (CONEL) in 1998. It became an independent entity in 2000.
Yesterday, Electrica Group announced to investors that it is cooperating with national cybersecurity authorities to investigate an “ongoing cyberattack.”

“We want to emphasize that the Group’s critical systems have not been affected and any disruptions in interaction with our consumers are the result of protective measures for internal infrastructure,” said Electrica CEO Alexandru Aurelian Chirita.
The CEO added that these measures are temporary in order to ensure the security of the systems. The company says that it prioritizes the distribution and supply of electricity and the protection of the personal and business data of everyone associated with the Group.

The power company has not officially revealed the nature of the attack, but the Ministry of Energy reported that Electrica fell victim attack that fortunately has not affected the SCADA systems used to control and monitor its distribution network.

"Initial investigations indicate that this was a ransomware attack. The network equipment has been removed and is not affected," said Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja.
