Hearing test
With this update, AirPods Pro 2 users will be able to take a hearing test directly from their iPhone. The test works by playing a series of sounds at different frequencies and prompting users to respond. The results are saved in the Health app, and users can adjust their AirPods sound settings accordingly.
Hearing aid
If the test indicates a hearing problem, the AirPods Pro 2 can automatically be configured to function as hearing aids. They do this by amplifying specific sounds in real time to help users with their daily lives. An Apple executive explained: “After you take a hearing test, AirPods Pro transforms into a personalized hearing aid, amplifying the specific sounds you need in real time, like parts of speech or elements in your environment.”

Hearing protection
The update also introduces improved hearing protection. The feature will constantly monitor the user's environment and reduce the impact of loud sounds (e.g. traffic noise or concerts), in real time. This feature will be integrated into various listening modes, including noise cancellation and transparency mode.

iOS 18.1 also includes the first Apple Intelligence, including Writing Tools, text and notification summaries, Siri's ability to answer questions about Apple products, smart replies to emails and messages, and more. Additional Apple Intelligence features will arrive later in another update.
