Employees from multiple Meta were laid off on Wednesday as the company announced a shift in resources to align its goals with its strategies.

A Meta spokesperson said that some teams will be moved to different locations and some employees will take on new roles, while in cases of role elimination, the company is trying to find other opportunities for the people affected.

The layoffs affected employees at Reality Labs, Instagram and WhatsApp.
One of the employees laid off is Jane Manchun Wong, a software engineer in the Threads team, known for publicizing unannounced features of Meta’s apps. Other former employees announced their layoffs on social media, including employees from various areas such as Facebook and legal operations. However, a Meta spokesperson said that the Threads, hiring and legal operations teams were not affected by the reorganization.
A former employee revealed that some were offered new positions or severance packages, with many choosing the latter. More than a dozen people were informed of the layoffs via video call, with some receiving six weeks of severance pay.

In recent years, Meta has laid off a large portion of its workforce, starting with about 11,000 employees in 2022 and following with another 10,000 layoffs in 2023, in order to adjust after hiring during the pandemic.
