Experiment shows 6G can use current 5G equipment

The upcoming 6G standard that will offer speeds up to 50 times faster than current 5G networks is still being finalized and is a distant dream scheduled for commercial release after 2030.

This 6G network development timeline, however, may be significantly shortened by a groundbreaking experiment that has managed to prove that current 5G network equipment and even 4G LTE can reach 6G speeds.

A research team from the University of Posts and Telecommunications in Beijing has demonstrated the potential of a new method for improving current 4G and 5G infrastructure to 6G, the next generation of mobile communication technology.

The breakthrough used so-called "semantic communication," a clever system for transmitting meaning, not just data, over existing network infrastructure. The new system drastically increased transmission efficiency and reduced data processing costs.

The network saw a 10x increase in key transport metrics, such as capacity, coverage, and efficiency, approaching the range promised to be achieved with the transition to the 6G standard.

6G wireless technology is expected to revolutionize communication, offering data transmission speeds up to 50 times faster than 5G and low latency.

While the United States and nine other countries outlined a set of guidelines for 6G communication systems earlier this year, the focus has been on creating a secure communications technology that prioritizes national security.

China , on the other hand, is already aiming to make 6G commercially available by 2030, with its concept of the 6G standard expected to be finalized next year. Japan also wants to complete work on the standard by 2025 and then roll out “ beyond 5G ” communication services in partnership with providers such as NTT Docomo and companies such as Sony from 2030.

If all of these plans could be done with the current infrastructure and cheaply with the semantic discovery of communication, these deadlines are likely to be significantly reduced.

The advent of 6G networks promises to revolutionize the way we interact with technology, offering unprecedented speeds and connectivity. Unlike its predecessor, 5G, 6G aims to seamlessly integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and the Internet of Things (IoT) on a massive scale. This new generation of wireless communication is expected to offer speeds up to 50 times faster than 5G, enabling instantaneous transfer of data and applications in real time. In addition, 6G will focus on improving network reliability, coverage, and energy efficiency, making it the cornerstone for smart cities and advanced automation systems.
