NASA is wrapping up a year-long experiment simulating life on Mars . Now, four volunteers are set to leave the simulated habitat they 've been living in since June of last year.
NASA's Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog experiment was created to see how scientists can keep astronauts healthy and productive during missions to Mars. The experiment was conducted in a 1,700-square-foot 3D-printed habitat that mimics conditions on Mars.

On June 25, 2023, Kelly Haston, Anca Selariu, Ross Brockwell and Nathan Jones began NASA's Mars simulation program, entering the Mars-like habitat. They have been there ever since, experiencing the conditions and challenges that astronauts will face on the red planet.
The four volunteers have conducted scientific experiments, practiced virtual Marswalks , and grown some of their own food, bringing back some greenery from Earth.
" Producing salad items can complement packaged meals, reduce menu fatigue, and provide a creative outlet for crew members who want to add a variety of fresh produce to their diet ," said NASA 's Gioia Massa , who leads the experiment's agricultural team. " Growing plants can also provide psychological benefits for astronauts living in isolated, confined environments far from Earth, and we hope to collect data on both of these aspects ."

In addition to experiments and tests, the crew dealt with other potential challenges of a Mars mission, including isolation. They also simulated equipment failures and intentionally delayed communications with NASA and Earth. During a real mission, radio signals can take more than 20 minutes to travel between Earth and Mars, meaning real-time communication is not possible.
The crew is set to complete the simulation program and leave the supposed Mars on Saturday, July 6. There will also be a broadcast of the volunteers' exit.
After the simulation is complete, NASA scientists will analyze the data collected over the course of the year. This data will include information on the volunteers' psychological and physical state, as well as the effectiveness of life support systems.
Analyzing the data will help understand the challenges humans face on long-duration missions to isolated and confined environments, such as Mars. This will allow for the improvement of protocols and technologies to be used on future missions.

The simulation will also provide valuable data for NASA to develop training programs for astronauts. These programs will include training in survival techniques, crisis management, and maintaining health and well-being in isolated environments.
The knowledge that scientists will gain will be critical to the success of manned missions to the Red Planet.
NASA plans to conduct two experiments year-long at the habitat. The next mission will launch in the spring of 2025.
