Wired and wireless smartphone mirroring has become increasingly popular in recent years. According to Wards Intelligence, more than 90% of new vehicles in mid-2023 were equipped with these systems. Many drivers prefer them over their vehicles’ native infotainment software , highlighting their significant value

Interestingly, the study revealed that 30% of electric vehicle buyers would be willing to pay for smartphone integration, compared to 17% of gas and diesel drivers, according to Auto News.

Additionally, the study asked respondents what they would do if Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were removed from their current vehicles. Globally, 35% of people said they would use the in-car infotainment system, 52% said they would resort to their smartphone and 14% said they would choose another brand for their next vehicle purchase.

Tesla of its customers wanted smartphone integration, but that number dropped to 30% as customers became familiar with the existing system.

General Motors will follow the lead of Tesla and Rivianby removing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its new models. Its new system is expected to gain favor with buyers.

“The infotainment experience should be tailored to each driver and vehicle,” said GM spokeswoman Anna Yu. “We’re moving toward a comprehensive system that seamlessly syncs with customers’ phones of choice, enabling deeper integration with vehicle controls and status. This new approach includes features like voice assistant, navigation, music, text messaging, calls, apps and more.”
