WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world today, and the app is slowly gaining traction in the US as well. This means that every small update (even a beta version) is carefully vetted, as millions of users could potentially be affected by any small change. In the midst of tweaking existing features, WhatsApp is also bringing in new ones, as we saw in April with the introduction of events in Community groups. The chat app is now working on a handy feature that complements virtual events, something that should have been there from the start.

WhatsApp engineers at WABetaInfo have found a new option to set reminders for Community events in the latest beta version of the app. When available, reminders will appear on the event creation page, which currently only has the basic information, such as the name, description, date, location, and a toggle to set up a WhatsApp call connection.
But in version 2.24.12.5 of WhatsApp beta for Android, WABetaInfo found a new reminders option on the event creation page. There’s also an Allow additional guests, which allows users to bring another guest to the event. This option isn’t currently present on all phones running a recent beta version of WhatsApp, which suggests its visibility is limited at this time.

Setting reminders for an event is a pretty basic feature that should have been included from the start, but WhatsApp users will be happy to finally see it come to the app. Users will have three reminder options — 30 minutes before, 2 hours before, and 1 day before — with users being able to choose up to two reminder options. It would be nice to have more reminder options here, but that’s likely coming in a future update.
WABetaInfo says that this event reminder feature in WhatsApp’s Community events is still under development, explaining why it’s not yet widely visible to all testers . However, given how useful event reminders are, developers probably won’t wait long before pushing it to the stable version of the chat app.
