Microsoft has announced a new artificial intelligence for Windows 11 called "Recall AI," which records everything you do on computer your and lets you search your activity history.

Recall AI acts like a photographic memory for your computer, allowing you to access everything you've seen or done on your computer, in an organized way, using queries in your native language.
With Recall, you can scroll through your timeline to find content from any app, website, or document you had open. The feature uses snapshots to suggest actions based on what it recognizes, making it easy to get back to specific emails in Outlook or the right conversation in Teams.
To use Recall AI on Windows, you'll need a Copilot+ that supports 40 TOPs NPU, a Snapdragon X, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Microsoft says the feature will only launch with support for select languages, which will be English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

You can control what information Recall can capture, and Microsoft says the AI works at the hardware level and keeps all data stored locally on device .
"Recall leverages your personal semantic index, created and stored entirely on your device," says a new announcement from Yusuf Mehdi .
While Microsoft states that no data will be sent to servers , one concern immediately comes to mind with this feature: how this recorded data will be secured locally on Windows devices.
If a malicious actor gains local access to a device, could they access this data or send it to their own computers to analyze the information offline for sensitive data?

Microsoft has not yet answered these security questions.
The company describes the Recall as follows:
“Recall AI uses the advanced processing capabilities of Copilot+ PC to capture images of your active screen every few seconds. The snapshots are encrypted and stored on your computer’s hard drive. You can use Recall to locate content you’ve viewed on your computer using search or a timeline bar that lets you navigate through your snapshots. Once you find the snapshot you’re looking for in Recall, it will be analyzed and give you options for interacting with the content. Recall AI will also give you the ability to open the snapshot in the original application it was created in, and as Recall improves over time, it will open the actual source document, web page, or email in a screenshot. This functionality will improve during Recall’s preview phase.”
