But is this AI technology as beneficial as Meta wants to present it?
The Meta AI experience has been full of spam so far. Nowhere is this more apparent than on Instagram, where the search feature, which was once a place to search for a friend’s account, now exists ostensibly to launch users into a conversation with a chatbot. “Ask Meta AI anything” now says in the search bar.
This new Instagram header also features a sidebar with prompts to interact with the AI, but it is limited and doesn't respond to user preferences.

The introduction of Meta AI—a suite of AI tools designed to make users’ lives easier and spend more time on Meta products—is a deliberate addition to a trendy area of emerging technology. If it fails, it will either be because users do n’t really want to interact with AI where they see their friends’ photos, or it will fail because it has made the whole experience somewhat complicated and annoying.
To that end, Meta has committed to flag AI-generated images , video, or audio on its platforms, but only if they detect “ industry AI image indicators .” They didn’t say what those indicators are.
