iPhone 17: Is it time for the screen upgrade we've been waiting for?

According to rumors, the Apple may equip all iPhone 17 models - i.e. iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Plus, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max - with LTPO screen (low temperature polycrystalline oxide).

This would be a change for the base and Plus models, which currently use LTPS (low-temperature polycrystalline silicon) displays. LTPO displays support 120 Hz refresh rates and can also drop down to 1 Hz, providing greater power efficiency when high renewal rate. Apple uses this lower refresh rate for always-on displays on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is absent on the standard iPhone 15.

If Apple equips the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus with LTPO displays, then these phones will likely have refresh rates from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. In addition, they are expected to support Possibility always open screen.

Chinese supplier BOE has reportedly delivered samples of LTPO displays to Apple in hopes of becoming the key supplier for the iPhone 17 series. The decision whether to do so depends on its ability to produce enough displays while maintaining high templates quality that Apple requires. Otherwise, LG Display or Samsung Display may be asked to take on this role, with these options not affecting the likelihood of LTPO displays being used in the four iPhone 17 models.

To treat these rumors with more credibility, we need to be cautious, especially when talking about phones that are expected to be released in about 18 months. Still, this isn't the first time we've heard that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus might feature 120 Hz displays, so it's quite possible.

Although this is taking a long time, Apple is trying to convince consumers to opt for a more expensive Pro model. So if the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus manage to stand out in this area, we're likely to see the gap widen in other areas. With the Pro models already featuring improved chipsets and improved cameras, it's not easy to predict what this will mean for the market.

One possibility is the incorporation of the Face ID below the screen, allowing Apple to reduce the size of the camera on Pro models. This has been heard simply as a rumor, but as with everything else related to the iPhone 17, it's not entirely certain.
