According to analysis by TRG Datacentres, Instagram is emerging as the leader in users’ desire to delete accounts, far surpassing all other platforms. Monthly searches for “how to delete my account” on Instagram reached over 1 million in 2023, indicating a significant number of users looking to leave the popular photo-sharing app. This staggering number translates to around 12,500 deletion queries per 100,000 people worldwide.

The revelation comes at a time of growing concerns about privacy, data security and the impact of social media on mental health. The growing trend of users deleting their Instagram accounts reflects a broader trend of frustration with the platform's policies and practices

While Instagram’s dominance in account deletion searches is significant, the analysis by TRG Datacentres also examines the performance of other social media platforms. The findings offer insights into changing user preferences and highlight areas where platforms may need to address concerns to maintain user trust and engagement.

Over time, Instagram has expanded its features, introducing “Stories” and incorporating video, live streaming, and shopping features. This evolution has shifted the platform from its original focus on photo sharing. Additionally, Instagram has become a primary platform for influencers, leading to an increase in sponsored content with the #ad tag, which can impact the user experience.
