Samsung announces advanced improvements to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, boosting the prospect of wider adoption of folding technology.

It has already been suggested that Samsung's attempt to release a cheaper "Fan Edition" of the Galaxy Z Fold series will exclude support for the S-Pen stylus. The latest leaks offer some welcome news for those interested in the groundbreaking Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Not only will Samsung's wearable continue to support the S-Pen, but it is expected to have a storage space for the pen built into the Z Fold 6. Previously, the S-Pen had to be carried separately, making it easier to lose and harder to grab and use in situations that require quick reactions.
Adding a storage compartment would create more space between the Z Fold 6 and a potential Z Fold 6 FE version, highlighting the more expensive model as the business segment, while the FE version can be more easily promoted as a consumer variant.

Details about the new changes come from a recent patent awarded to Samsung. Titled “Electronic Device With Flexible Display” (PDF Link), it addresses one of the biggest problems with foldable smartphones in everyday use: they are more bulky, especially when closed, compared to the standard form factor.
First, the pivot assembly is thinner than the current pivots on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is always welcome. It also addresses the stress that can be placed on a folded device by a detent-style pivot.
This allows the device to have several “fixed” positions as it moves through its trajectory. If Samsung follows this path for the Z Fold 6, you’ll have a folded device with a few preferred positions. I’d suggest these would be in the fully flat position when open, a 90-degree angle to demonstrate a shape used in Samsung’s marketing materials, and perhaps 120 degrees to provide a comfortable viewing angle for multimedia.
These detents should also support both sides of the Z Fold 6, reducing stress between the two sides of the device.

The designs on the Fold are also notable. The folded device doesn’t match the design of the current Z Fold devices. Unlike the current tall and narrow shape when closed, the cover display is wider and shorter, moving it closer to the form factor of Samsung’s Galaxy S and Galaxy A devices. It’s a nod to devices like the OnePlus Open and Honor Magic V2.
Normalizing the Z Fold 6 to be closer to a regular phone is key to increasing adoption. While these designs are general, patents can indicate a company's thinking and direction on a product.
While the features and processes seen in the patents are not guaranteed to make it into consumer hardware, in the case of a pivot assembly in a folded phone, I would expect to see many of the techniques – if not the entire assembly – as part of the Galaxy Z Fold 6.
