Home appliance giant Haier has issued a copyright notice to a software developer who has published Home Assistant plugins for its home systems , which are available on GitHub .

Haier is a multinational home appliance and consumer electronics company that sells a wide range of products under the General Electric Appliances, Hotpoint, Hoover, Fisher & Paykel and Candy.
Earlier this week, German software developer Andre Basche, who manages Home Assistant add-ons for Haier's hOn smart control app, reported that he received a notice demanding the immediate removal of his tools from the platform .
Home Assistant is an open source home automation platform that allows users to control and automate devices from a central interface. In addition to convenience and cost, Home Assistant offers superior security and privacy options not available in similar commercial applications.
The add-ons offered in the GitHub repositories allow users to control air conditioners, hoods, dishwashers, induction hobs, ovens, refrigerators, washing machines and dryers from Haier, Candy and Hoover via Home Assistant.
According to a statement released by the repository owner, Haier claims that these add-ons cause significant financial losses to the company and violate copyright laws, requiring the developer to remove them to avoid further legal action.
The letter ultimately culminates in a legal threat to the developer, warning that if it fails to immediately comply with the request for removal, the company will take legal action to seek compensation for the damages caused to its business.

These add-ons are open source, but it is unclear whether they include Haier's intellectual property, such as software code or proprietary protocols, which would give the company a legal basis for the request.
On the other hand, if the add-ons do not infringe on Haier's intellectual property or fall within the provisions of fair use, the creator may choose to defend their work and keep the add-ons available to the community.
However, Haier's legal threats have terrified the developer, who announced that the project will be withdrawn in the coming days.
At the same time, the situation has sparked support for the developer and backlash against Haier, with users calling on consumers to boycott Haier, considering the company's approach too aggressive.
