PS5: Hidden files are stealing your console's game storage space

Your PS5 console may be loaded with content you don't need – and didn't even know was there. A few seconds to delete it can free up a significant amount of storage space.

Video games can take up hundreds of GB of storage. And your PS5 with 825GB of storage only has 667.2GB of usable storage. Even on the 1TB model, you'll end up with about 842.2GB of storage — so sometimes you might have to delete games to install new ones.

However, hidden away in your PS5 is a default setting that's slowly but surely eating up your valuable storage space. It's part of the Trophy system, which rewards you with achievements for completing specific missions in games.

Some gamers may not realize that when they earn a Trophy, their PlayStation console automatically captures a 15-second video in high-definition 4K and also takes a screenshot.

This won't matter much if you've just got a PS5, but even the most casual gamers will have amassed a considerable amount of material if they've had a PS5 for some time.

Even if you just bought your console, it's best to address the problem right away. Decide if you really want all those trophy videos – and if you don't, change your settings.

  • Simply go to Settings > Recordings and Broadcasts > Automatic Recordings > Trophies.
  • Then, simply uncheck the Save trophy videos.
  • Now you'll need to go to your media files and delete any of the videos with Trophies that you no longer want – likely, most or all of them.

After this action you may find that you save huge amounts of storage space by performing this process.
