CISA’s plan aligns with the national artificial intelligence strategy, focusing on leveraging AI and protecting AI systems from threats. At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of implementing basic security practices for AI systems, building on existing cybersecurity programs. CISA recognizes the security issues faced by previous generations software and promotes responsible use and security throughout the AI lifecycle.

CISA encourages manufacturers to build security into their products as a core requirement. CISA’s plan includes five key guidelines for advancing AI. These include responsible use, software adoption, protecting critical infrastructure from malicious use, collaboration with other agencies, and education on AI. The plan sets goals for each of these directions and outlines performance measures that will be defined in CISA’s annual operating plans.
