A new assessment from the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center cybersecurity ( MTAC) has warned of the potential challenges that the 2024 elections (in various countries) will face .
In its latest report, Microsoft suggested that authoritarian states may attempt to interfere in electoral processes, using a combination of traditional methods and emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI).

Microsoft emphasizes the need for governmentscompanies technology, businesses, and society to take proactive measures to secure elections.
To help, the company unveiled a set of principles that should guide efforts to protect electoral processes in the United States and other countries, for the crucial 2024 elections:
- Ensuring that voters have reliable election information
- Providing assistance so that candidates can identify and address issues created by artificial intelligence
- Supporting campaigns against cyber threats with accessible tools
- Equipping electoral authorities with secure electoral tools
Recognizing these challenges, Microsoft is introducing several initiatives to help the situation. First, it is launching “Content Credentials as a Service,” a tool that allows users to digitally sign and authenticate media, using digital watermarking credentials to prove the origin and authenticity of the content. This will help candidates maintain control over their content and images.

Then, the “Campaign Success Team” will support political campaigns in navigating the world of artificial intelligence and combating influence campaigns in cyberspace.
The third tool Microsoft will release is the “Election Communications Hub,” which will help democratic governments around the world create secure and resilient election processes. This hub will offer access to Microsoft security and support teams in advance of elections.
Additionally, Microsoft said it will support legislative changes to protect campaigns and election processes from deepfakes and content AI. It supports the Protecting Elections from Deceptive Artificial Intelligence Act, which restricts the use of AI to create deceptive content in political ads.
Finally, Microsoft will offer voters authoritative election information through Bing, in partnership with organizations such as the National Association of State Election Directors, EFE and Reporters Without Borders.
Importance of election protection
In previous years, we have seen state hackers interfere in other countries' electoral processes. Now, artificial intelligence can help them carry out more effective attacks.
If immediate steps are not taken to address the challenges and cyber threats in the upcoming elections, many problems will arise. One of them is the loss of public trust in the electoral system. If voters do not have confidence in the integrity and security of the elections, the legitimacy of the results may be questioned and social unrest may result.

Furthermore, the lack of effective security measures can lead to a breach of voters’ confidential information. If attackers manage to gain access to personal data, such as names, addresses and voting preferences, it can lead to a breach of privacy and potential misuse of the data.
Also, the absence of effective security measures may allow the spread of false information that can influence public opinion and the decision-making process of voters.
Finally, failure to address threats can lead to the failure of the democratic process in general. If elections are not free and fair, the ability of citizens to choose their representatives can be undermined and the legitimacy of political decisions can be affected.
