Ace Hardware: Stores fell victim to cyberattack

It appears that Ace Hardware is the latest organization to fall victim to a cyberattack, judging from its website and a message from CEO John Venhuizen.

Today's bulletin warns that the cooperative distribution company is unable to process online orders. A note from Venhuizen indicates that the problem is serious.

In a memo sent to Ace dealers this week, Venhuizen said: “On Sunday morning, we identified a cybersecurity incident affecting the majority of our systems. As a result of this incident, many of our core operating systems, including ACENET, Warehouse Management Systems, Ace Retailer Mobile Assistant (ARMA), Hot Sheets, Invoices, Ace Rewards and the Care Center phone system, have been disrupted or suspended.”

Based on comments on social media, it seems that things are not going well. Internet users who claim to work in the organization's reserves report that they have been texted to go home, while others fear that they will not be paid on time.

The most recent updates, however, say that these stores will remain open and the organization noted that there was no known impact on the payment systems within the stores, nor on the processing of credit cards.

This means that you can purchase items from the Ace physical store that are in stock. However, if you need services , such as placing an order or using any other service, you will not be able to do so.

Ace Hardware has not yet specified the type of attack it suffered, only that it is working to restore its systems and operations and that it has had to call in some digital forensics experts to assist.

There are many vulnerabilities that could have been exploited to bring down an organization's IT. Citrix were asked to update a critical Netscaler bug last week. We note that MGM Resorts admitted that the September cyberattack may have cost the entertainment giant $100 million.

Ace Hardware Corporation is described as the world's largest cooperative hardware store chain, headquartered in Illinois, United States. The company offers tools and other DIY necessities and claims to have more than 5,000 stores worldwide, most of which are independently owned and operated.

The company has observed a decline in its revenues recently, as it announced that its revenues for the first quarter of 2023 amount to $2.1 billion, a decrease of 5.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.

The potential consequences of a cyberattack on an organization can be severe and impact its operations. One of the most common outcomes is the leakage of sensitive information, such as customer personal data or company confidential information. This can lead to a breach of privacy and a loss of trust from the organization's customers and partners.

Additionally, a cyberattack can cause an organization to experience service disruptions, as attackers can disable computers or servers. This can lead to significant business disruption, loss of revenue, and damage to the organization’s reputation.

Finally, a cyberattack can have long-term impacts on the business. The organization can suffer damage to its reputation, reduced trust from customers and partners, and loss of competitiveness in the market. Additionally, recovery from a cyberattack can be costly and time‑consuming, requiring the reorganization of systems and the strengthening of security measures.
