Theoretical physicist calls the chatbots "exalted magnetophones"

The public's concern about the new artificial intelligence technology is mistaken, according to theoretical physicist Michio Kaku.

In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria on Sunday, the futurist said chatbots like OpenAI will benefit society and increase productivity. But fear has led people to focus largely on the negative impacts of the programs, which he calls "glorified tape recorders."

“It takes excerpts from what exists on the internet and has been created by a human, combines them and plagiarizes them as if it created these things”, he said. “And people say: “My God, it's a human, it looks like a human””.

However, he said, chatbots cannot distinguish the real from the fake: “This must be done by a human”.

According to Kaku, humanity is in the second stage of computer evolution. The first was the analog stage, “when we calculated with sticks, stones, levers, gears, pulleys, spindles”.

After that, around World War II, he said, we moved to transistors that operate with electrical energy. This made possible the development of the microchip and contributed to shaping today’s digital landscape.

But this digital landscape is based on the idea of two states such as “on” and “off” and uses binary notation consisting of zeros and ones.

“Mother Nature would mock us because Mother Nature does not use zeros and aces”, said Kaku. “Mother Nature computes with electrons, electron waves, waves that create molecules. And that is the reason why we are now entering the third stage”.

He believes that the next technological stage will be in the quantum field.

Quantum computing is an emerging technology that uses the various states of particles such as electrons to greatly increase a computer's processing power. Instead of using computer chips with two states, quantum computers use multiple states of oscillating waves. This makes them capable of analyzing and solving problems much faster than conventional computers.

Several tech giants — including IBM, Microsoft, Google and Amazon — are developing their own quantum computers and have granted access to various companies to use their technology via the cloud. The computers could help businesses with risk analysis, supply chain management and machine learning.

Beyond the business applications, Kaku said that quantum computing could also help advance healthcare. “Cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease – these are diseases at the molecular level. We are powerless to cure these diseases because we need to learn the language of nature, which is the language of molecules and quantum electrons.”.
