OpenAI just released custom instructions for ChatGPT users so they don't have to type the same instructions into the chatbot every time they interact with it - inputs like "Write the answer under 1,000 words" or "Keep the tone of the answer formal.".

The company said this feature allows you to “share anything you’d like ChatGPT to consider in its response.” For example, a teacher could say they teach fourth-grade math, or a programmer could specify their preferred coding language when asking for suggestions. A person could also specify the size of their family so ChatGPT can provide answers about meals, groceries, and vacation planning accordingly.
While users can already specify these things during their conversation with the bot, custom instructions are useful if users need to specify the same context frequently.
Directions also works with plug-ins, making it easy to recommend restaurants or flights based on your location.
OpenAI noted that the feature is available to Plus users, but will not be available to people outside the EU and UK. It is a beta feature for now.
Users can try this feature online by clicking on their name and going to Settings > Beta Features > Opt into Custom instructions. On iOS, users can access this via Settings > New Features > Enable Custom Instructions.

Specifically, OpenAI says that the information given in the adaptation responses will be used to train API models to adapt to different instructions.
“Information from your use of custom instructions will also be used to improve the model’s performance – such as teaching the model how to adapt its responses to your instructions without overdoing it,” the company said. However, users can opt out of this setting through their data control settings.
OpenAI has been testing this feature with some users for a while now, as noted by consultant Gavriel Cohen on Twitter. ChatGPT provides users with two boxes to specify their chat preferences, where users can write about themselves and how they want to tailor the chatbot’s responses.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT allows users to enter responses, with changes taking effect in the next session. Responses are limited to 1,500 characters. The company uses its Restrictions API to scan custom guidelines for safety, refusing to save or ignoring those that lead to harmful or intolerant responses. The ChatGPT app initially launched for iOS users in the US and has expanded its availability to more than 40 countries. It also launched an iPad app with Siri and Shortcuts support, as well as an option for users to search for answers online using Bing directly from the ChatGPT app.
Although the option has reportedly disappeared for some users, don't be surprised if the feature is not available to you at this time.
