Sega: Rejects Blockchain Plans, Calls F2P Games “Boring”

In April 2021, at the height of Web 3 Mania, Sega was one of the biggest companies to stake its future on the “play to earn” scam. Now, just two years later and after completely disappearing from the market, Sega has changed its mind.

As they wrote at the time in Kotaku, in an article about the NFT sale that Sega wants to do:

“Sega Japan announced earlier today that it will be entering the NFT space, partnering with (and buying a stake in) a company called Double Jump Tokyo, with plans to not only sell character-related tokens, but also NFTs in future games.

The announcement is sparse on details, but as Pocket Gamer reports, Sega hopes this “will be the beginning of a sequential expansion across a variety of content, including IPs currently in development and new IPs to be released in the future.”

Those plans are now mostly over. In an interview with Bloomberg, Sega co-CEO Shuji Utsumi said the company will now “withhold its major franchises from blockchain gaming projects to avoid devaluing its content” and will “shelving plans to develop its own games in that genre, at least for now.”

“We’re looking into whether this technology is going to really take off in this industry,” Utsumi told the website, adding that while its “biggest franchises” are off the table, “lesser-known” properties, like Three Kingdoms and Virtua Fighter, will still have some connection to NFTs, albeit from third-party providers.

His best quote, however, is the one where he says it bluntly: “The action in play-to-earn games is boring. What’s the point if the games aren’t fun?” That’s what they told you in 2021, we’re glad you finally got it.
