Snapchat is a popular social platform and messaging app known for its innovative photo and video effects. Its features include Lenses, which use augmented reality to change your appearance, as well as filters – coloring or patterns that you can add to photos or videos. You can also get fancy with your Snapsby including text, drawing shapes, and placing stickers around everything!

1) Using Lenses (Face Effects)

Unlock Snapchat on your device of choice and a screen with yourself will appear. If you want to apply Lenses to someone else, simply tap the two arrows on a square icon located in the top right corner to instantly switch from the front camera to the back camera.

  • Lenses are special effects that are applied in real-time with facial recognition.
  • Lenses are used before you take or record a Snap, while filters are added after you take a Snap. You can use both on the same Snap.

Tap the smiley face icon. It's at the bottom of the camera screen. This expands the Lens at the bottom of the screen.

Hold your phone away so you can see your entire face. If you're using Lenses on another person, make sure their entire face is in the frame.

Also, make sure the lighting is decent, as darkness can hinder facial recognition.

Choose the Lens you want to use. Swipe left and right on the icons in the carousel to see what's available, then tap a Lens to try it out.

Tap Explore to find more Lenses. It's in the bottom right corner of the screen. Here you can browse Lenses made by other Snapchat! Search for something using the “Search” at the top of the screen, or swipe left to browse by category, like Trending and Face.

Press and hold the microphone icon in the top right corner to try Voice Scan, a new feature that lets you ask for any type of Lens you want to try.

Tap a Lens to check it out. If you find one you like, you can tap the Favorite at the bottom of the screen to save it to Favorites . Tapping a Lens will also add it to Favorites , which is located at the top of the Explore.

Tap the World tab at the top of the Explore page to try a World Lens . These Lenses add effects to your surroundings instead of your face.

Follow the on-screen instructions for the Lens you selected. Many Lenses will show a quick command to perform the effect. For example, to create the rainbow with vomit, you'll be asked to open your mouth.

To take a video Snap with your chosen Lens , simply press and hold the Capture. For those who just want to take a photo, press it once – your result will be saved to Snapchat !

If you took a photo, you can tap the stopwatch icon on the right side of the preview to check how long the recipient can see the image.

2) Use filters

Open Snapchat on your phone or tablet . Snapchat you ’d rather use the rear camera to capture something else, tap the icon with two arrows in a square in the top right.

On the main Camera, tap down on the large circle to take a picture or lightly press and hold to record a video. If you take a photo, simply tap the hourglass icon in one of the rows on the right side of your screen and set how long the same image should be visible before it disappears from viewers' devices.

Swipe through the various filters available. Simply swipe left or right on the photo or video preview to see a selection of filters: from changing colors and lighting to adding illustrations.

Enable Location Filters to use local filters. If you haven't enabled Location Services for Snapchat on your phone or tablet, you'll be prompted to enable Location Filters while swiping through the filter options. Location Filters are filters for specific places and events in your area. For example, if you're at a sporting event, you might find a location-based filter related to the stadium or one of the teams. Tap Enable , then tap Allow to allow Snapchat to access your location.

Tap the Layers icon to layer multiple filters. To add more than one filter, swipe your finger across a filter you like, then tap the icon that looks like a stack of papers with a plus sign just above the Send to lock it. Then, swipe your finger across another filter you like, then tap the same icon to add it to your filter stack. You can add up to 3 for photos and up to 5 for videos.

3) Add Stickers and designs

To start decorating your Snap with Stickers, simply tap the icon on the right side of your screen that looks like a folded sticky note. This will open up a world of decoration possibilities and allow you to access an unlimited number of Stickers via the Sticker explorer.

Tap the Star tab to access a selection of attractive Stickers. Simply tap on the one you want and place it where you want it on your photo or video, before resizing it if necessary.

Pinch to zoom out or pinch to zoom in . You can also rotate Stickers by placing two fingers on their edges and rotating them at the same time .

To select a GIF as a Sticker, tap the GIF search icon at the top of the Sticker.

Some of the Stickers add information based on your environment, such as temperature and MPH.

Tap the wink face to add Bitmoji stickers. It's next to the Star tab . If you've linked Bitmoji to Snapchat , you can select one of your Bitmoji versions of yourself to add as a sticker. You can also resize and move them.

To create a personalized Cameo Sticker, tap the fourth icon at the top of the Sticker explorer. With this unique feature, you can place your face anywhere and do other amazing things with it – why not invite a friend to join in for even more fun?

Tap Create my Cameo, place your face in the frame, then tap Create My Cameo to take the photo.

Select a body type and click Continue.

Tap Use this Selfie to save your work.

If you want to create Cameos with friends, tap OK to allow others to see Cameo . If not, tap the checkbox before tapping OK.

Tap a Cameo animation to add it to Snap .

Pin stickers to objects in a video Snap. When you press and hold any Sticker in a video Snap, the video will pause, allowing you to drag the sticker over an object in the frame. If you release the sticker on that object, you’ll “pin” it and the sticker will follow the object as it moves across the screen.

Tap the emoji icon to add emoji. It's the last icon in the Sticker explorer. This allows you to add an emoji to Snap as a sticker.

Make your own Sticker. The scissors icon at the top of the Sticker explorer is where you'll find all the stickers you've made yourself. If you haven't made any yet, it'll be empty. To make a sticker, go back to Snap and tap the larger scissors icon there. Then, use your finger to outline any part of the video, like a person's face. You've now created a Sticker that you can move anywhere on the screen with your finger.

You can remove the sticker from your image by holding it down and dragging it towards the Sticky-Note, which will turn into a trash can as you approach.

Draw on your Snapchat photo or video . Tap the pencil icon in the top right corner to open the drawing tool. Choose a color from the color picker, then tap and hold the screen to draw. If you don't like what you drew, tap the undo button (a curved arrow pointing left) to the left of the pencil.

Tap the heart eyes emoji to draw with an emoji instead of color.

4) Add text

Tap T to add text to a Snap. After taking a Snapchat, tapping T in the top right corner lets you type some text.

Enter your text. You will type your text on the line that runs horizontally across the screen. The text is automatically added to the center of the screen.

Tap a text style. To change the font and size, tap one of the options just above the keyboard, such as Big Text, Glow, or Serif.

Drag the slider to the desired text color. This is the vertical sliding palette in the upper right corner.

If you want to change an individual letter or word, select the letter or word, then tap the color picker to change the color of that letter or word.

Tap Done to view your text on your Snapchat photo or video . It's okay if you don't like what you see yet—there are more changes you can make.

Move, resize, and rotate text. Tap and drag the text to move it to the desired position. You can also resize the text by pinching it to make it smaller, or by reverse pinching it to make it larger. Rotate two fingers together on the text to rotate the text to the desired angle.
