Will Microsoft's greed be the end of AI chatbots?

When Microsoft integrated ChatGPT's chatbot into Bing, it managed to do something it had been trying to do for years: make people love its search engine. But if it's not careful, its eagerness to capitalize on Bing's rare victory could do more harm than good.

According to Bloomberg, Microsoft has threatened search engines that use Bing to revoke their licenses if they use Bing data for their own AI chatbots.

Indexing is expensive, which is why smaller engines like DuckDuckGo pay the companies behind its engines, like Bing and Google, so they can use their own indexing for their products.

While it seems Microsoft is happy to make money from providing Bing indexing, it doesn't want it used for competing AI chatbots. From the report, it appears that the company has already warned at least two of its customers not to use indexing in their chatbots, saying it violates the terms of their contract, resulting in them losing access.

However, Microsoft has every right to dictate how its services and features can be used. However, this move could also be seen as a suppression of competition to ensure that Bing AI monopolizes.

After the introduction of Bing AI, various companies started announcing similar tools. So when Microsoft itself threatens to stop using the indexes, it is a direct blow to the search engines that rely on them to deliver results.

Smaller companies could turn to others to source their indexes. However, the only company after Microsoft to provide the same service is Google, and judging by its preparations for Bard AI, it makes sense that the reaction will be similar. Let's just hope that the greed of big companies doesn't kill the chances of AI chatbots evolving before they even get started.
