Lords of the Fallen: New engine and new name for the sequel

Lords of the Fallen

The sequel to the 2014 RPG Lords of the Fallen has officially removed the “the” from its title as well as the original developer engine.

The new Lords of the Fallen will run on Unreal Engine 5, allowing the game to maximize its hyper-gothic vibes.

In a technical trailer, Hexworks developers described how they made some changes to the existing Unreal Engine 5 technology to improve the game.

For example, the team used 3D scans of people to improve the engine's morphing system. This way, you can see how the player's body gradually changes as you move the cursor through the options.

The Unreal Engine's Chaos Physics feature makes all your movements look more realistic during combat. A character that looks a lot like Bloodborne swings his bat and you can see each piece of his equipment swing in the direction of the attack and then return to its original position over time. It's a small feature but it will help immensely with the game by making it more grounded as you take on the close combat.

Proposal: Epic and Soartech create simulations with Unreal Engine 4

The next scene, with a wide shot of the cathedral using Unreal Lumen GI lighting, is gorgeous. It looks like someone recreated a Diablo in Unreal, except in Lords of the Fallen you can climb the stone steps in third person.

Hexworks is able to place orbs around to highlight areas of the room without impacting game performance as much as full, simulated lighting.

In Lords of the Fallen, you'll regularly switch between the land of the living and the land of the dead. Both worlds will resemble each other, but have distinct characteristics. Using a custom toolset, Hexworks is able to create both worlds side by side, so they feel connected in the game.

The first Lords of the Fallen may not have been memorable, but its sequel certainly has the technical power to expand the scope of its dark fantasy.

Lords of the Fallen is set to be released sometime this year.
