Akamai successfully thwarts a massive 900Gbps DDoS attack

Akamai reported that it has prevented one of the largest DDoS attacks it has ever received against a customer in the Asia-Pacific region.

DDoS is a malicious tactic used to overload and shut down servers, making websites, applications, or other online services hosted by the server inaccessible. This can be done by using bots that generate an excessive number of fake requests to saturate the targeted server's capacity.

These attacks are usually intended to disrupt a business, whether this is due to political interests, retaliation, competitive interests, geopolitical reasons, or to exploit the victim by handing over ransom conditions.

The record-breaking DDoS attack prevented by Akamai took place on February 23, 2023, reaching 900.1 gigabits per second and 158.2 million packets per second.

Akamai characterizes this attack as intense and short, with its peak lasting for about a minute, as long as attacks .

The cybersecurity firm handled the attack well, routing unwanted traffic to its scrubbing network, most of which is located in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Singapore, and Osaka, we can significantly reduce the garbage traffic.

Scrubbing networks are a measure to mitigate DDoS attacks that involve distributed structures from multiple strategically located centers that can receive traffic and remove unwanted requests from the target network.
