Galaxy Note 9 gets surprise update six months after support ends

Six months after Samsung officially ended support for the Galaxy Note 9, the Galaxy Note 9 is suddenly getting a new software update! The device was released four years ago, and this unexpected revival of the 2018 model has come to show just how strong and reliable this phone really is. With such durability, it's no wonder people are still choosing to buy it today, even though official support ended last September.

Recently, SamMobile noticed that the Galaxy Note 9 has received its latest update in Ireland and the UK. This version comes with the firmware build number N960FXXSAFWB3 and brings a relatively updated security patch. Specifically, users will receive the February 2023 SMR (Security Maintenance Release).

Samsung hasn't released the March SMR for Galaxy devices, although it's already available. So the Galaxy Note 9 is technically getting the latest security patch

The February SMR contains more than 50 vulnerability fixes. Seven of these are Galaxy-specific patches that come directly from Samsung. The remaining patches come from Google and other Android OS partners.

Google has marked five of the potential security issues discovered as critical, meaning they could be exploited to allow remote code execution in a real-world environment. Fortunately, Galaxy Note 9 users can rest assured that their device is protected from these vulnerabilities with its latest update.

Samsung is pushing out a surprise update for the Galaxy Note 9 in some markets

Just over a week ago, the update for the Galaxy Note 9 was first released in the UK and Ireland. However, since Samsung is not obligated to offer support for this phone, it is unclear whether or not it will roll out this update globally.

Although Samsung has delivered updates to discontinued phones around the world in the past for critical bug fixes, we don't think that's the case this time.

As usual, the Galaxy Note 9 will notify you when a new software version is available. You can also check for updates by going to the Settings app and checking for them manually.
