According to the Associated Press, New York City has implemented a new pilot program that uses traffic cameras with sound meters to more effectively enforce the Stop Loud and Excessive Exhaust Pollution Act (SLEEP). If caught violating the law, drivers will be subject to an $800 fine for their first offense — which can increase to $2,625 if they ignore the hearing for a third offense.

In June 2021, the SLEEP Act was passed and officially went into effect in April 2022. This legislation is dedicated to reducing excessive vehicle noise by prohibiting the use of illegal modifications to exhaust systems.

To date, the New York Department of Environmental Protection has issued fines to at least 71 drivers whose cars were making excessive noise. After the fantastic success they have achieved so far, they are now keen to incorporate more sound meters into their traffic cameras in order to promote the reduction of noise pollution in the state. If you drive a car or ride a motorcycle that has not been illegally modified to order – then there is nothing to worry about!
