TikTok is testing a full screen mode for horizontal videos

Despite TikTok’s impressive success, which has reached over a billion monthly active users, it never stops trying to get better. TikTok’s latest experiment to introduce a full-screen mode for horizontal videos viewed on mobile phones is yet another example of how the ByteDance-owned company remains competitive with YouTube and other giants. It’s no wonder that this social media platform continues to be incredibly popular among internet users around the world.

The company confirmed to TechCrunch that users selected for the test will see a button on square or rectangular videos in their feed. Tapping this button will expand the video horizontally and fill your entire screen. TikTok is famous for its short, vertical videos, but creators are required to place “rotate your phone” messages at the beginning of clips shot in landscape mode . If this feature is officially released by TikTok, they won’t have to do that anymore! The rollout is subject to user feedback and further evaluation before it becomes available globally.

Naturally, this isn’t TikTok’s first attempt to gain an audience that prefers YouTube’s structure – earlier in 2021, the maximum video length was extended from three minutes to an impressive ten. Plus, as of mid-2020, kids and teens are spending more time on TikTok than they are on YouTube – so the company’s efforts are clearly paying off!

Why is TikTok so popular?
TikTok has become incredibly popular because of its ease of use—it's quick and easy to create content—and its ability to connect people from all over the world who have similar interests. It also encourages creativity—many users find their niche on the app by posting content they're passionate about or content they think will be fun for others to watch.
