Apple recently released its new line of super-fast Macs, but it seems like the trusty little Mac Mini has been left behind. The company has stuck with the old chips despite the release of its new super-powerful devices, leaving many users wondering why the Mac Mini wasn't included in this upgrade.
The Mac mini with M1 , released in November 2020, is the oldest Mac to feature Apple 's latest silicon . Unfortunately, it's already been surpassed by three devices—the 13-inch MacBook Pro , the refreshed MacBook Air , and the iPad Pro —that feature the newer M2 chip, which offers a 20% performance boost . At WWDC , Apple announced its availability, and now with all three of those devices running the M2 chipset—it makes sense that the hard-working Mini should be rewarded too !
Despite requiring minimal internal modifications, Apple has yet to add the M2 chip to the Mac Mini. Reports from earlier in 2021 suggested that a new version of the Mac mini was originally slated for release sometime this year – however, those plans have apparently been superseded by their brand new project – the Mac Studio. However, rumors have it that a refreshed design featuring the M2 Chip is still in production and could be released as early as 2023!

The entry-level Mac mini M1 is the most affordable option in Apple's lineup, but those looking to invest more can opt for a higher-spec model powered by Intel. Although it was refreshed with double the storage capacity in 2020, it remains identical to the Space Gray unibody from 2018.
Reports suggest that Apple is ramping up its efforts to introduce a new Mac Mini. Not only has there been talk of replacing the outdated high-end model with an Apple Silicon, but now it looks like both the entry- and high-end versions could be unveiled at the same time. Rumor has it that two separate devices with different processors are being developed – one will feature the “M2”, while the more elite counterpart will be powered by an “M2 Pro”. Anticipation for these upcoming products continues to grow!
new high-end Mac mini could offer huge performance and energy efficiency gains over the current model, while also boasting more Thunderbolt ports than the original. It's also likely to be a redesign, as the machine hasn't been updated in two years since Apple began the transition to custom silicon chips inside the Mac. As a result, of all Apple's devices, it seems the top-end Mac mini is in dire need of a hardware refresh.
