Airbnb's fees will become more transparent after a planned update to the platform's search function.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said today that starting next month, users will be able to see a breakdown of their total trip charges — which will include things like cleaning fees — simply by turning on a feature. Here at Airbnb, we understand how important it is to know up front what you’re being charged. That’s why, among other features, we prioritize the total cost (before taxes) of your entire stay in our search engine results, instead of just the nightly rate.

According to Chesky, if you flip the toggle, you’ll be able to see how much a property costs in total (excluding taxes) in search results, map listings, price filters, and listing pages. Users will also be able to easily understand fees, service charges, discounts , and taxes for accommodations and travel. Despite these changes, still annoying not to know how much taxes you’ll have to pay until you get to the final step of booking.
It's unclear why the company is making the all-inclusive price an opt-in experience via a toggle rather than the default search parameter.
The company is making these changes as guests complain about cleaning fees and other hidden charges that have increased recently. In a blog post last year, Airbnb said it transparently displays all fees on all listings — but that apparently wasn’t enough. As a result, the company was forced to make these changes.

While it’s important to be transparent about fees from the start, that doesn’t stop hosts from charging exorbitant amounts. The company offers advice to hosts on setting reasonable cleaning fees, but there’s no system or penalty for those who don’t follow these suggestions.
With these new search options, Airbnb is also rolling out pricing and discounting tools for hosts. These will allow them to set final prices that include all fees, which will help attract more guest placements under specific price filters in terms of total fees.
